A question asked by : Is Alzheimer’s disease hereditary and can a person stop it?
Both my grandfathers died from Alzheimer’s. When one of them died the called it dementia, but this was back in the 80s so maybe it was really Alzheimer’s.

Can a person protect themselves from it? I work with a couple of vegans and they say a vegan diet might help.
Maggie: Hm, heart disease runs in families too. A person can eat a healthy diet and exercise to avoid heart problems. Why not with Alzheimer’s?

Chosen answer:

Answer by Sanctia
Diet helps a lot, and keep active! You need to eat foods with a lot of antioxidants, such as blueberries, greens, etc. A vegan diet helps because it incorporates many antioxidant foods, but you don’t need to go completely vegan to reap the rewards. Prevention is a big thing… if you take care of yourself early enough, dementia won’t be too big of a looming possibility.

How about adding your own answer to the comments below!

If it had only been a single incident, Jim Mann might not have gone to see his doctor. When a series of strange events happened within one month of each other, he knew something was wrong. Because of his age Jim didnt expect to be presented with a diagnosis of Alzheimers disease, but being only 58 years old people did not believe him; they said he was too young. He now says that finding out was the best thing he could have done; that the knowledge has allowed him to fight the progression of the disease. If youre concerned about a loved one, take him or her to see their doctor. Visit www.onmemory.ca

Is it possible to develop Alzheimer’s disease when you are very young?

My chosen answer:

Answer by justwondering
The youngest I have heard of anyone developing it was early 30′s, though that’s very rare and it occurred in a family with a VERY high prevalence of it.

There are other conditions and forms of dementia that can affect young people though.

A question asked by Nicole S: Is there an expected time frame for each stage of Alzheimer’s disease?
I understand the general life expectancy time frame, but I was wanting a time frame more specific to each stage. At 3.5 years from diagnosis, my grandmother is at moderate dementia; unable to recall my name although she recognizes me as a friendly face. She is not incontinent yet, but needs assistance with toileting, dressing, etc.

Chosen answer:

Answer by omg
Its different for everybody. My friends grandmother has it and she has had it for 5 or 6 years now but still recognizes me,my mother,my father,my grandmother,my friend, her daughter. She will only forget names every now and then but hey im 14 and forget names now and then but she knows who we are.

Question posed by : Why do people die from alzheimer’s disease?
What causes alzheimer’s patients to die and is the short term or long term memory affected first?

Most detailed answer:

Answer by Zachary
Alzheimer’s patients die because they simply forget the basic things like how to eat, or how to use the bathroom.

It is a very horrible thing to see and all memory is affected eventually. There are many ways to prevent this disease though.

The most important thing to do is exercise at least 1 hour a day. This is proven to lessen the chance of getting the disease.
