Question by Trisha P: How early can you be tested for Alzheimer’s?
At what age can you be tested for Alzheimer’s? This disease is on both sides of my family and I’m trying to find out how old you have to be before they will test you for it. I know that they can’t test for dementia until your 70′s, but what about Alzheimer’s?

There isn’t a blood test or tissue test that a doctor can do to find out whether or not you will develop Alzheimer’s. It’s usually diagnosed because the person begins having symptoms and other tests come back negative. Alzheimer’s is proven to be Alzheimer’s after the person’s passing, with a test on the brain then.

I know it’s hard not to worry about it when you have people on both sides of your family with Alzheimer’s but the only way is to wait and see if it develops, and meanwhile you can’t sit around worrying that you’ll get it. Live your life and don’t wait to see if you get Alzheimer’s. You will not do yourself any good worrying about it.

Good luck

A question asked by Savannah: What’s the chance of my boyfriend developing Alzheimer’s disease?
So I’ve been with my boyfriend for a long time now. His dad was just diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. He’s in his late 40′s. I’ve been doing research on the disease and learned that early-onset is inherited. I am at a loss of what to do. My boyfriend could have inherited it and he’ll become the same way in his 40′s. What do I do? Or is there a way to find out if he got it or not?

Alzheimer’s has a strong genetic link. Since his father had the disease, his chances grow that he may get the disease as well. There is no specific tests that are definitive on if a person has it or not. Doctors take a family history, medical history, and blood tests to rule out other conditions first before making a diagnosis.

Click on the link below for some good information on Alzheimers and genes. I hope that helps. Regardless of the fact that he may develop this one day, don’t treat him any different. Enjoy his company and be there for him when he needs you.
Take care.

Age is only one factor in Alzheimer’s. I have seen fairly young people with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Especially those with Downs Syndrome.

Information About Alzheimer’s Disease?

A question from Faith: Information about Alzheimer’s disease?
How is the disease diagnosed?
Treatment of the disease – medicinal or physical therapy?
Long term affects. What can a person with this disease expect over their lifetime?
Prevention if any?

thank-you!!!

How is the disease diagnosed?
-Usually by clinical examination. There’s a test called the mini-mental status exam that helps. Brain imaging is usually NOT helpful, though ultra-specialized testing (PET scan) can sometimes be useful.

Treatment of the disease – medicinal or physical therapy?
-Medicines only, physical therapy will be of no value. There is something called cognitive therapy, but I don’t think this works. Even the medicines are pretty unimpressive and do little to change the course of the illness.

Long term affects. What can a person with this disease expect over their lifetime?
-Unfortunately, the disease is progressive, which means it will gradually get worse. Symptoms start with simple forgetfulness, and progress to getting lost, losing the ability to understand, visual hallucinations, delusions, to severe debilitation.

Prevention if any?
-Exercise your brain! Do intellectual-type activities like cross-word puzzles, reading. Also, keeping in good general health (cardioresiratory exercise, good diet) makes you less likely to have the disease.

“People who develop Alzheimer’s disease get a sticky plaque in the brain called amyloid beta,” explained Kilham to Dr. Manny Alvarez in a recent Fox News interview. Such plaques either develop as a result of Alzheimer’s, or they are the direct cause of it. But either way, they are directly related to the degenerative process.

However studies show that turmeric actually eliminates these plaques, both when they are first starting to form and even during the late stages of their advancement.

“What we have in turmeric is something that appears to inhibit the development of Alzheimer’s disease…and actually help to reduce the occurrence of plaque in the brain if you have it,” noted Kilham. “We know in animal studies, when animals actually have amyloid beta plaque in their brains and they’re given turmeric root…that plaque is reduced.”

Observational studies have also shown that people groups who eat large amounts of turmeric virtually never get Alzheimer’s.

“In countries where people consume a lot of [turmeric], there’s a very low incidence of Alzheimer’s disease,” emphasized Kilham. “In India and Southeast Asia, it’s a rare disease. And [in the U.S.] it’s very, very common.”
