How Does the Moon Affect With People With Dementia?
My mom is a caregiver and she has a client that has dementia. The client was really…really…not herself as usual today. (i don’t know what word to describe it) My mom and I was outside and we saw that there was a full moon. My mom said so that’s why she was acting this way today. I got confused. She said when there is a full moon people with dementia act differently. She said it happens to all dementia people. I don’t understand how the moon affects her at all…HELP! THANkS!

There has been a lot of anecdotal information about the full moon and bizarre behavior. The source has a nice discussion of it.
As it notes, the word lunatic is based on the Latin word luna which means moon.
I am an RN and have heard this for years. There is no way of knowing if in this client’s case if there is a connection or just a cooincidence. One would have to see a pattern over a number of full moons.
However the patient’s delusion dictate. There’s little correlation between the moon and behavior. People used to say a waxing and wanning moon caused people to behave differently and that there is higher crime during those periods.
Of course, what they forgot to take into account was that most bills are due at the beginning and end of each month.
