A) You don’t CATCH alzheimers.
B) If you already have it, you can’t PREVENT it.
C) You don’t get it from smoking.
D) Have her go to the doctor.
There is NO preventing the disease, but evidence shows that the onset can be delayed, and once symptoms develop, the progress can be slowed. There is much research going on now, many things have been implicated, Aluminum may be a culprit in women ??? Diet has been implicated, so many things. Hopefully, i the near future, we can alleviate the symptoms..but only with research and the money to support this research. Good luck
Not really much you can do. Research is promising but I think there is only one product on the market, and I’m not sure how effective it really is.
Unfortunately the only way Alzheimer’s can be determined with certainty is at autopsy. Although there is news this week of a new method of determining where and how much plaque is being deposited on brain cells. This is very promising.
My mom has Alzheimer’s and I don’t think there would have been anything to prevent it. She was put on Airacept at first – which was supposed to be so good. Now she has progressed to the newest things on the market. The stuff she has taken doesn’t help a bit. I still give it to her, but I really think it is just about making money for the pharmaceuticals.
It is a really sad disease. To add to that she has Parkinson’s – lots of times the two diseases are together – for some reason.
Tell your friend to right NOW, get her wishes written down and make sure ALL her affairs are in order. Good luck.
I have read papers that suggest people who routinely use their brains on a daily basis, have a reduced risk of alzheimers. Sorry, I don’t have a link or an author for the study, but I do remember reading that test participants in the “reduced catagory”, played crossword puzzles / word games every day. Playing these kind of games seemed to keep the brain synapsis from degenerating over time!
A note, if someone isn’t already doing this, picking it up late in life probably won’t make any difference.
