A question from : Can Alzheimer’s be detected before symptoms appear?

Is there a cure? Can it be detected prenatally? Is there a way to detect a carrier?

The No 1 answer:

Answer by x
Not yet to all of these.

We are working towards biomarkers that would allow us to detect AD prior to symptoms. Potential biomarkers are serum proteins and MRI scans.

There is no and will likely never be a “cure.” The direction science is moving toward is prevention of the disease. We will ideally be able to detect the disease 20-40 years before it presents and then implement a multi-faceted treatment stradegy.

There are no tests in practice to detect any forms of AD prenatally.

Less than 5 % of AD is an early onset form where specific genetic mutations are known, and only about 62 % of this 5 % is familial (meaning is was passed down through more than one generation).
The other 95 % of AD is sporadic late onset. There is an increase from 12 – 15 % risk to a 25 % risk of getting AD if you have a primary relative with the disease. However, this does not necessarily imply a genetic risk factor because spouses have also been found to have an increased risk when their long-term live-in partner suffers or has suffered from AD.

New Alzheimer’s Test

I found this video about alzheimer’s test recently and believe that you will find it informative.

If there were a test that would reveal whether you’d develop Alzheimer ‘s disease, would you consider taking it? Scientists say there is now a spinal fluid test that can do just that with 100 percent accuracy. A new test highlighted in the archives of neurology may help identify Alzheimer ‘s disease earlier using spinal fluid. And with estimates that one in eight Americans will develop Alzheimer’s, doctors including Jeffrey Milks at Riverside Hospital’s family practice center say spinal could be a great tool.

Question by : I was told that my mother who is in the final stages of Alzheimer’s had to have a pike put in. What is that?

The internet isn’t for medical diagnosis. We aren’t trained to tell you about medical matters.

This is something you should have asked the doctors or nurses…whoever told you that this was happening…you need to ask THEM about this. Every case is different.

A question from Scott: Is it possible to develop Alzheimer’s disease when you are very young?
Is it possible to develop Alzheimer’s disease when you are very young?

My chosen answer:

Answer by justwondering
The youngest I have heard of anyone developing it was early 30′s, though that’s very rare and it occurred in a family with a VERY high prevalence of it.

There are other conditions and forms of dementia that can affect young people though.
