Question posed by Meanie: Can Alzheimer’s disease cause this to happen?
I know an elderly person who seems to have aphasia (difficulty in understand and articulating language) and this person has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. I am told that the language barrier occurred after surgery on the hip. This surgery happened about a year ago and ever since then the person has appeared to have aphasia. Is it possible that the aphasia is caused by Alzheimer’s disease affecting the part of the brain that controls speech and comprehension?
Most comprehensive answer:
Answer by reneem1954_2000 Are they on some type of pain medications still. I seemed to be more that way since I had surgery on my foot and I dont have ALzheimers. I also have short term memory loss and wonder if I am getting Alzehimers. I will mark your question since I am curious about this too. I bet it is possible for them to.

Question posed by platform supporter: a friend with Alzheimer’s is certain people are stealing from her?
My friend with the AD diagnosis is hiding things around her house and then forgetting where she put them; she is convinced someone is entering her house and stealing from her. This includes money (last time was 2000 cash!), and objects, including a gun and now she says, a billyclub. WHat she had that for I have no idea. I have searched and searched with her for her money, and found little stacks of it here and there and pointed it out to her–”See, not stolen, just misplaced.” I have no idea what to tell her when she thinks she is being stolen from again and again; I have offered to take her shopping for a safe to bolt to the floor and asked her to keep all her money and things in one or two places ONLY, but she does not listen. I worry, as she has had her locks changed twice in the last two months. Nobody is coming in and stealing; SFAIK, the only people with access to her house are me, a few friends and a cleaning lady.
Does anyone have any advice about what to do?
the friends I mentioned above are her friends, also elderly like her. I seriously doubt they, or anyone, is robbing her. I guess maybe the only person I wonder about is the cleaning lady, but my friend insists she is never near where she keeps her money. I doubt her ability to recall things like that, though.
Any advice is appreciated, especially from anyone with a family member or friend going through the same thing.

Question posed by georgia_1234567890: How can you differentiate between dementia and depression?
I think an elderly client of mine might have dementia, but she may just be depressed.
Is there a medical test I could administer to give me a likely diagnosis?
The No 1 answer:
Answer by alyssa k Dementia and depression are two extremely different things and there are several tests for both to determine wether a patient has either.
There are lots of tests which only require yes/no answers which can be found online which help to diagnose depression… beyond blue is a good website.

Question posed by jojo: Can a fall cause death to an elderly person with Alzheimer’s being in the last stage?
I heard of an elderly lady in the news that that fell and broke her hip then she got a heart attack and died? Can that happen to a person on the last stages of Alzheimer’s if they fall? Can it cause a heart attack?
Top answer:
Answer by Tim G Any large amount of stress, physical activity or even extreme pain can cause a heart attack in an elderly person. If a senior falls when they are alone, they can panic and that by itself can cause a heart attack in a person whose heart is already weak. A fall most likely won’t cause death by itself though. Alzheimer’s wouldn’t have much do to with the cause of death in such a situation.
