A question from Anria A: How do you tell someone if you suspect their family member has Alzheimer’s?
Im a carer who looks after an eldery old women.
She is increasingly starting to show the symptoms of demetia, like forgetting present events but remebering past events, great changes in her personality and terrible mood swings, being unable to recognise the feelings of others, and often getting agressive.
Im faced with the moral dilemma, should I mention this to her children who will arrange for her to see a specialist, but if the diagnosis is wrong, I face upsetting her terribly and causing unecesarry stress.
On the other hand I feel bad avoiding this issue, as a carer what should I do?

A question asked by GreenEyedLilo: Would you want to take a blood test for Alzheimer’s?
It’s coming up. The test being worked on may predict Alzheimer’s by up to 6 years before diagnosis.
A question from numbersnumberseverywhere: Is Alzheimer’s disease the proof that most people live in false hope?
The degredation of the mind due to Alzheimer’s disease proves that the mind and, resultantly, the human consciousness are both transient things.
Does this prove that most preconceived notions of an afterlife are fundamentally flawed? Most people believe that we will be able to perceive, evaluate and understand any kind of afterlife that may exist.
But clearly, as Alzheimers proves, the mind cannot possibly survive without a functioning human body. It is a possibility that a kind of eternal soul lives on, but, surely, if the consciousness dies then the thing that makes you an individual, self-aware human will cease also.

Question posed by Miz D: Is it risky to leave a person with Alzheimers/Dementia alone?
My neighbor with this diagnosis of Alzheimer’s/Dementia is being left at home alone for several hours at a time. Should this be a cause for concern? I wouldn’t want to cause trouble for her son, her caretaker. Please tell me what you think. Do I just need to mind my own business?
I did suggest to her son that Home Care services were available to assist him with taking care of his mother but he said she would not allow “strangers” into the house.

A question asked by Michael D: Is depression an autoimmune diease of the brain?
Medical science does not know for certain exactly what causes depression. Drug companies encourage doctors and scientists to call in a chemical imbalance, because drug companies sell chemicals. But no one is certain what causes it. Some doctors and scientists are beginning to think it is one of the approximately 80 autoimmune dieases that affect the body and the mind. It would explain a great deal. It would explain why people with psychosis or schizophrenia suddenly become well: the immune system shuts down. It would explain why people with AIDS never experience depression or an increase in depression: no immune system. It would explain why anti-depressants are the best prevention for heart attacks: they dampen the immune system in the brain and around the heart. They are finding that hardening of the arteries is largely caused by the immune system which results from stress. Many dieases are being linked to an autoimmune diease of the brain: alzheimer’s, MS, anorexia, Parkinson’s.
