Studies have been made connecting Alzheimer’s disease to red wine but in a good way. Based on these scientific studies, a compound found in red wine may combat the said disease. There is something in grapes that make them very healthy. However, this does not mean that you should count on wine to cure the disease. Thinking that if you drink wine, you will not have Alzheimer’s, is not right.

So what is in red wine that makes it special and may in the future make it a good source for a drug for Alzheimer’s disease? The compound is called Resveratrol. It can be found in red wine, grapes, some berries, and peanuts as well. The compound in itself is an antioxidant and is widely known for its health benefits. Studies also show that the disease is rare in places where red wine is actually a common beverage.

Moreover, research also shows that Resveratrol can hamper beta-amyloid, a protein found in people suffering from the disease, which is also an ingredient of plaques in the brain. To check if other antioxidants can do what Resveratrol does, experts tested on a handful of antioxidant rich fruits. The results however were not as good as the said plant compound in grapes and red wine. Now, the development of this, as a drug to treat the disease, is being thought as a scaffold, and is now being modified to make it a more stable and active treatment for Alzheimer.

All these benefits however are still on the stage of hypothesis and on-going research. It has not been totally proven to do anything yet. Nevertheless, Resveratrol pills are already out in the market. Consumers are advised to be careful with the use of such pills.
